Why Go

Topper's Rhum Distillery is one of the few places in the Caribbean where you can watch rhum being made from fresh sugarcane juice in copper pot stills and then taste the results — all in the same visit. This award-winning micro-distillery in Cole Bay produces proper rhum agricole using traditional methods, and their guided tours give you a genuine education in Caribbean spirits. If you've been drinking rum all vacation without knowing the difference between rhum agricole and industrial rum, this visit will change that.

The Experience

The tour runs about 45 to 60 minutes and walks you through the entire process: sugarcane harvesting, pressing, fermentation, distillation in copper pot stills, and aging. The guides are knowledgeable and passionate — you'll learn more about rum production in an hour than most people learn in a lifetime of drinking it. The distillery is small enough that you're genuinely close to the equipment, not watching from behind a rope. The tasting session at the end covers their full range, and you'll quickly understand why they've won multiple international awards.

What to Try

The tasting flight is the highlight — try the white rhum first, then work through the aged expressions to understand how time changes the spirit. The flavored varieties (coconut, pineapple, vanilla) are crowd-pleasers and make great gifts. The aged rhums are where the craft really shows. Non-alcoholic options are available, and the tour itself is interesting enough without the tasting if you're not drinking.

Insider Tip

Go on a weekday morning when they're most likely to be actively distilling — seeing the copper pot stills in operation adds enormously to the experience. Buy bottles here rather than at the airport or shops — the full range is available and you may find limited releases that aren't distributed elsewhere.

The Practical Stuff
