Loterie Farm
Ziplines, jungle pools, and Caribbean-Asian fusion at the foot of Pic Paradis
Why Go
Loterie Farm is one of those places that makes St. Maarten more than just a beach destination. This private nature reserve sits at the base of Pic Paradis — the island's highest peak — on the grounds of a former 18th-century sugar plantation. Where else can you zipline through a tropical canopy, swim in a spring-fed jungle pool, spot wild monkeys, and then sit down for a proper meal, all in the same afternoon? It's genuinely unlike anything else on the island.
The Experience
The moment you drive up the mountain road and through the gates, the beach-resort St. Maarten disappears. You're surrounded by dense tropical forest, the air is cooler, and the sounds are birds and rustling leaves instead of jet engines and dance music. The property is beautifully maintained and offers multiple experiences: the Fly Zone zipline courses (including an extreme option with lines up to 490 meters), hiking trails through the forest, a stunning spring-fed pool surrounded by teak cabanas, and the Jungle Room Restaurant. Green vervet monkeys roam freely, and you'll also spot iguanas, parrots, and hummingbirds throughout the grounds. Saturday pool parties are legendary.
What to Try
Start with a zipline run — the Fly Zone Extreme is genuinely thrilling and the canopy views are spectacular. After, cool off in the spring-fed pool (it's as beautiful as the photos suggest). For food, the Jungle Room Restaurant serves Caribbean-Asian fusion that's better than it needs to be for what is essentially an adventure park. The Saturday brunch is a social event worth planning around. Cocktails poolside are mandatory.
Insider Tip
The kids adventure park makes this legitimately family-friendly, but if you want the adult pool party experience, come on Saturday. Book the zipline for the morning when it's coolest — you'll work up a sweat on the Extreme course. Bring mosquito repellent for the hiking trails, especially after rain.
The Practical Stuff
Open daily 9 AM to 6 PM at 103 Route du Pic Paradis, Rambaud. You absolutely need a car or taxi to get here — it's up in the hills, about 20 minutes from Simpson Bay. Budget for $$$ when combining activities and dining. Zipline courses are booked separately and should be reserved in advance during high season. Wear closed-toe shoes for the zipline and comfortable clothing for hiking. The pool area has chair and cabana rentals. Credit cards accepted.
