Plage des Petites Cayes — Hidden Wild Beach for Hikers
A 45-minute hike to complete Caribbean solitude.
Why Go
Plage des Petites Cayes is a pristine wild beach within the Réserve Naturelle de Saint-Martin, accessible only by a 45-minute to one-hour hike from Anse Marcel or Grande Cayes. Soft white sand, clear turquoise water, no people, no facilities, and no noise — the most unspoiled beach on St. Martin.
The Experience
Petites Cayes is for those willing to earn their beach. The hike from Anse Marcel or Grande Cayes takes 45 minutes to an hour through coastal scrubland on a sometimes-challenging trail. The payoff is a beach that feels like it belongs to you alone: soft white sand, turquoise water, and the knowledge that everyone else on the island is fighting for lounge chairs at Orient Beach while you have this to yourself. The beach sits within the nature reserve, so it is protected and undeveloped — no bar, no shade umbrellas, no lifeguards, just the natural coastline. Swimming is lovely on calm days, and the isolation creates a meditative quality that busy beaches simply cannot match.
What to Try
Swim in complete solitude. Sit on the sand and listen to nothing but waves and wind. Photograph the wild coastline. The hike itself is part of the experience — enjoy the coastal vegetation, bird life, and changing views along the trail. Bring a book and spend hours uninterrupted.
Insider Tip
The trail can be challenging in spots — wear proper hiking shoes, not sandals. Start early to avoid the midday heat during the hike. Bring more water than you think you need (minimum 1.5 liters per person). The return hike takes the same time, so plan your departure accordingly. Tell someone where you are going, as the trail is not heavily trafficked and there is no phone signal at the beach.
The Practical Stuff
