Why Go

Grande Cayes (Grandes Cayes) is a long, wild beach on the northeast coast of French Saint Martin, part of the Réserve Naturelle de Saint-Martin. White sand, crystal-clear water with coral reefs, views of Tintamarre Island, and hiking trails to the secluded Petites Cayes beach — all protected in their natural state.

The Experience

Grande Cayes represents St. Martin's wild, protected coastline at its finest. The beach is part of the Réserve Naturelle, which means no development, no beach bars, and no lounge chairs — just white sand, turquoise water, and the natural coastal environment as it has been for centuries. The coral reefs offshore provide excellent snorkeling with sea turtles, rays, and colorful reef fish in protected waters. Tintamarre Island is visible on the horizon, and on clear days the view stretches across the channel. The Sentier des Froussards hiking trail connects Grande Cayes to the even more secluded Petites Cayes beach, offering a coastal walk through xerophilous vegetation (dry-climate plants adapted to the rocky coastline). Families use the beach on holidays for its natural setting and calm-enough water.

What to Try

Snorkel the coral reefs for sea turtles and rays — the reserve's protected status means marine life is abundant and less disturbed. Walk the Sentier des Froussards trail to Petites Cayes for a multi-beach adventure. Watch for wildlife in the reserve's dry-climate vegetation. Bring a picnic and spend a half-day in complete natural immersion.

Insider Tip

As a nature reserve, Grande Cayes has strict protections — do not disturb marine life, coral, or vegetation. There are no facilities, so bring everything you need. The beach can be windy (northeast-facing Atlantic), which is great for avoiding bugs but less great for calm swimming. Snorkeling is best on the calmer days. Go early for solitude — local families tend to arrive in the afternoon, especially on weekends and holidays.
