Lovers Beach — Hidden Romantic Cove Between the Bays
A tiny, secret beach tucked between cliffs — for two.
Why Go
Lovers Beach (Plage des Amoureux) is a tiny, secluded cove on the French side between Galisbay and Friar's Bay, reached by a short but steep and challenging hike. Turquoise water, rocky surroundings, and a pebble-sand beach small enough that two people fill it — the most romantic hidden spot on St. Martin.
The Experience
Lovers Beach earns its name. The cove is barely larger than a living room, tucked between rocks at the base of a steep cliff descent. The turquoise water is sheltered and calm, the rocky surroundings create a natural amphitheater of privacy, and the beach is so small and difficult to access that you are almost guaranteed to have it to yourself. Snorkeling along the rocky edges reveals fish and marine life in the clear water. The challenge is getting there — the descent is steep, potentially slippery, and not for those uncomfortable with climbing over rocks. But the intimacy and beauty of the hidden cove make the effort worthwhile for couples and adventurous spirits.
What to Try
Swim in the sheltered turquoise water. Snorkel along the rocky edges. Pack a small picnic for two and enjoy the most private beach dining experience on the island. Photograph the cove from the trail above for dramatic angles.
Insider Tip
Check the tide before going — at high tide, the beach can be partially or fully submerged. Low tide is essential for comfortable access and space. The descent is steep and requires some scrambling — wear shoes with grip, not flip-flops. Bring very little gear, as you will be carrying it down a rocky slope. Best visited on calm sea days when the water in the cove is peaceful.
