Friar's Bay Beach

Local favorite where the French side keeps it real

Why Go

Friar's Bay sits on the French side's northwest coast, tucked behind a hillside that shields it from the main road and keeps the crowds thinner than the famous beaches. This is where residents come on their day off — a horseshoe-shaped cove with calm water, a couple of laid-back beach bars, and the kind of unhurried atmosphere that makes you forget you had plans for the afternoon.

The Experience

The approach sets the tone: a winding road descends through dry scrubland before the bay suddenly reveals itself below — turquoise water framed by green hills with a strip of golden sand curving between rocky headlands. The beach bars here operate on island time, serving grilled fish, cold Carib beers, and rum punches while reggae drifts from speakers at a volume that allows conversation. The water is typically calm and clear, ideal for swimming and snorkeling along the rocky edges where sergeant majors and parrotfish patrol. Sunday afternoons bring a local crowd for beach barbecues and dominoes. The northern end of the beach offers more privacy, with shade provided by sea grape trees. From Friar's Bay, the short hiking trail to Happy Bay departs — making this beach both a destination and a trailhead.

What to Try

Order the grilled fresh catch at one of the beach bars — it changes daily depending on what the fishermen brought in. Snorkel along the rocks at either end of the bay where the marine life concentrates. Walk to the quieter northern section for shade under the sea grape trees. If you're feeling adventurous, take the 15-minute hike over the hill to Happy Bay.

Insider Tip

Sunday is the day to come for the local vibe — families gather, the grill smoke thickens, and the dominoes get competitive. On weekdays, you might have entire sections of the beach to yourself. The beach bar on the right side as you face the water tends to have the better food; the one on the left has stronger drinks.

The Practical Stuff
