Happy Bay

A short hike to secluded paradise

Why Go

Happy Bay rewards those willing to earn it. A 15-minute hike over a scrubby hillside from Friar's Bay leads to one of St. Martin's most peaceful stretches of sand — a small, clothing-optional cove where coconut palms provide the only shade and the turquoise water is so clear you can count fish from the shore. No roads reach it. No vendors work it. Just the sound of small waves and the occasional rustle of a palm frond.

The Experience

The trail from Friar's Bay is well-worn but unsigned, climbing gently through dry coastal vegetation before cresting the hill and revealing the bay below. The first glimpse always stops hikers in their tracks — the water color alone justifies the walk. The beach is small enough to feel intimate but long enough to offer privacy, especially on weekdays when you might share it with only a handful of other visitors. The sand is soft and pale, bordered by lush green hillsides and rocky outcrops that create natural windbreaks. Swimming is excellent in the calm, shallow water that deepens gradually. Snorkeling along the rocky edges turns up parrotfish, tang, and the occasional sea turtle. Coconut trees lean over the sand at photogenic angles, providing pockets of shade that shift throughout the day. The clothing-optional atmosphere is relaxed and judgment-free — textiles and naturists coexist comfortably.

What to Try

Hike over from Friar's Bay in the morning when the trail is coolest and the beach is emptiest. Bring a snorkel to explore the rocky areas where fish congregate. Claim a spot under a coconut palm and settle in — rushing defeats the purpose. Float in the shallow turquoise water and let the gentle current carry you slowly along the shore.

Insider Tip

Start the hike from the north end of Friar's Bay beach — look for the trail heading up the hill. Bring everything you need: water, snacks, sunscreen, shade. There are zero facilities. The return hike is slightly harder because it's uphill, so save some energy. Weekday mornings offer the most solitude. The beach faces west, making it perfect for sunset — but remember you still need to hike back in fading light.

The Practical Stuff

Accessed via a 10-15 minute hike from Friar's Bay Beach on the French side. No road access, no facilities, no vendors. Bring all supplies including water and shade. Free access. Clothing-optional. Wear proper shoes for the hike (not flip-flops). Best in calm weather. The trail is exposed — sunscreen and a hat are essential.
