Fort St. Louis — French Colonial Ruins Above Marigot

Climb the hill for history, stay for the harbor views.

Why Go

Fort St. Louis rises above Marigot on the French side, a hilltop ruin from the 1760s that commands sweeping views of Marigot Bay, the marina, and on clear days, the islands of Anguilla and Saba on the horizon.

The Experience

The short but steep climb from Marigot's waterfront to Fort St. Louis rewards you with the best views in the capital. Built by the French to defend Marigot harbor from British and Dutch incursions, the fort's stone walls and cannon placements still stand in various states of picturesque ruin. The 360-degree views from the summit are the real draw — Marigot Bay stretches below with its marina full of sailboats, the open sea extends north toward Anguilla (visible on clear days), and the green hills of the island's interior roll southward. Morning light is best for photography, but sunset transforms the harbor into gold. The trail from town takes about 10-15 minutes and is well-maintained with steps carved into the hillside.

What to Try

Hike up from the Marigot waterfront — the trailhead starts near the Marigot Market area. Bring a camera for the harbor views from the cannon positions. Read the historical markers that explain the fort's role in the island's colonial conflicts. On a clear day, count the islands visible on the horizon — Anguilla, Saba, and St. Barthélemy are all potentially visible.

Insider Tip

Go early in the morning before the heat sets in — the climb is exposed with little shade. Wednesday and Saturday mornings are ideal because you can combine the fort hike with the Marigot Market happening below. The trail can be slippery after rain, so watch your footing on the stone steps.

The Practical Stuff

Trailhead located near the Marigot waterfront/market area. Free access, open during daylight hours. The climb takes 10-15 minutes and involves steep stone steps — moderate fitness required. Wear closed-toe shoes with grip. Bring water and sunscreen. No facilities at the top. Allow 45-60 minutes for the round trip including time to explore the ruins.
