Fort Amsterdam, perched on a narrow peninsula between Great Bay and Little Bay, is the oldest Dutch military fortification on St. Maarten. Built in the 1630s, the ruins sit in a dramatic clifftop position with panoramic views of Philipsburg harbor, the cruise ships at anchor, and the surrounding coastline.
The Experience
Fort Amsterdam was built by the Dutch West India Company as the island's first European fortification, though it changed hands between the Dutch, Spanish, French, and English multiple times over the centuries. Today, the ruins are modest — partial walls, a few cannon placements, and the remnants of what was once a strategic military position. But the setting is spectacular. The narrow peninsula juts out between two bays, offering 270-degree views of the water. Pelicans dive-bomb the waves below. Cruise ships loom in Philipsburg harbor. The Divi Little Bay resort occupies the adjacent property, and the fort is accessible via a short walk from the resort grounds. For history enthusiasts, interpretive signs explain the fort's colonial significance and the complex power struggles that shaped the island.
What to Try
Walk the fort ruins and read the historical plaques. Photograph the panoramic views of Great Bay and the cruise ships. Visit during golden hour for dramatic lighting on the stone walls and coastline. Combine with a swim at Little Bay Beach, accessible from the area below the fort.
Insider Tip
The fort is most atmospheric in the early morning or late afternoon when the light is warm and the cruise ship crowds have not yet arrived or have already departed. The walk from the Divi resort area is short but uphill — wear sturdy shoes on the rocky path. This is one of the least-visited historical sites on the island, so you may have it entirely to yourself.
The Practical Stuff
Located on the peninsula between Great Bay and Little Bay, near the Divi Little Bay Beach Resort. Free access. No facilities at the fort — bring water. Accessible via a short walk from the resort grounds (non-guests welcome on the path to the fort). Unpaved path, so flip-flops are not ideal. Allow 30-45 minutes for the visit including the walk.
