Named for its sunrises, loved for its snorkeling.

Why Go

Dawn Beach on the east coast near Oyster Pond earns its name every morning as the first beach on the island to catch the Caribbean sunrise. White sand, clear turquoise water, excellent snorkeling, and the relaxed atmosphere of the Dutch-French border area make it a destination for early risers and beach lovers alike.

The Experience

Dawn Beach faces east, positioning it perfectly for sunrise viewing — the reason for its name and a compelling reason to set an early alarm. As the sun climbs over the Atlantic horizon, the light transforms the white sand and turquoise water into a golden panorama that no west-coast sunset can rival (though the island has those too). Beyond the sunrise, Dawn Beach offers excellent snorkeling conditions with clear water and reef formations close to shore. The Oyster Pond area straddles the Dutch-French border, giving the neighborhood a unique bicultural character. The beach is accessible through nearby resorts but remains public, with a more relaxed and less commercialized atmosphere than the major resort beaches.

What to Try

Set an alarm and watch the sunrise from the sand — the east-facing exposure is the only beach on the island where you can do this properly. Snorkel in the clear water for reef fish and marine life. Swim in the turquoise surf. Combine a morning beach session with breakfast at a nearby resort or restaurant.

Insider Tip

Dawn Beach is the island's best-kept sunrise secret — most tourists sleep through the best light. Arrive 30 minutes before sunrise for the full color show. The JW Marriott resort provides the main access point, but the beach is public. Morning conditions are typically calmest with the best visibility for snorkeling. Afternoon can bring stronger Atlantic swells.
