Two kilometers of white sand, French flair, and everything in between.

Why Go

Orient Beach on the French side is arguably the most famous beach in the Caribbean — and it lives up to the reputation. A long crescent of white sand lined with beach bars, water sports operators, and lounge chairs stretching toward the turquoise Atlantic.

The Experience

Orient Beach is a full-day destination, not just a beach. The two-kilometer stretch is divided into distinct zones, each with its own character. The southern end near Club Orient is the clothing-optional section, a legacy of the beach's European roots. Moving north, you pass through a series of beach clubs — Bikini Beach, Kontiki, Kakao — each offering their own vibe, food menu, and lounge chair setup. The water is warm, generally calm, and that shade of turquoise that makes people question whether it is real. Water sports operators offer jet skis, parasailing, kayaks, and paddleboards. The beach was heavily damaged by Hurricane Irma in 2017 but has been rebuilt and is once again the buzzing, vibrant stretch that put St. Martin on the beach map.

What to Try

Rent a lounger and umbrella at one of the beach clubs — prices typically include a minimum food or drink order. Try the grilled lobster at one of the beachfront restaurants. Book a parasail flight for aerial views of Orient Bay and the offshore islands. Kayak or paddleboard to nearby Green Key (Ilet Pinel launch is around the corner too).

Insider Tip

Arrive before 10 AM for the best lounge chair selection, especially during high season. The beach clubs on the northern end tend to be slightly less crowded than the popular middle section. Sunday afternoons bring a local party atmosphere with music and dancing. And yes, the southern clothing-optional section is real — walk past the signs at your own discretion.

The Practical Stuff

Located on Avenue des Plages, Orient Bay, French side. Free beach access — lounge chair and umbrella rental runs roughly 15-25 euros per set. Parking is free but fills up fast on cruise ship days and weekends. Restaurants and bars accept euros and usually US dollars. Water sports priced separately. No lifeguards — swim at your own risk. The beach faces east, so morning sun is direct; afternoon brings some shade from the hills behind.
