Caribbean Paddling

Paddle to Pinel Island through crystal-clear marine reserve waters

activity
Kayaking Eco-Adventure Pinel Island Family Activity Snorkeling

Why Go

Caribbean Paddling puts you in a kayak or on a SUP in Cul-de-Sac on the French side, facing directly toward Pinel Island across some of the clearest water on St. Martin. The 15-to-20-minute paddle to the island is easy enough for beginners and stunning enough for experienced paddlers, taking you through the Marine Reserve where the water is shallow, warm, and full of marine life. It's one of the most rewarding self-guided experiences on the island — no boat engine, no crowd, just you and the Caribbean.

The Experience

You'll launch from the Cul-de-Sac shoreline with a quick orientation from the team. The crossing to Pinel Island is calm and well-protected, making it accessible for families and first-timers. Once across, you can explore the island's beaches, snorkel right off shore, or paddle further into the mangroves for wildlife spotting. The gear is high quality and well-maintained. As an eco-certified partner of the Saint Martin Nature Reserve and member of 1% for the Planet, they take the environmental side seriously — you'll be briefed on reef-safe practices.

What to Try

The tandem kayak is the most popular choice for couples and families — stable, easy to paddle, and gives you room for dry bags. Single kayaks and SUPs are available for solo paddlers. Multi-day rentals are a smart option if you're staying in a villa nearby and want to paddle multiple mornings. Once on Pinel Island, combine the paddle with snorkeling — the reef right off the beach is excellent.

Insider Tip

Go in the morning before 10 AM when the water is calmest and the snorkeling visibility is best. Bring water shoes — the launch point can have some rocks. The mangrove route on the east side of Pinel is less traveled and great for spotting herons and turtles.

The Practical Stuff

Located in Cul-de-Sac on the French side, about 20 minutes from Philipsburg by car. Moderately priced rentals. Book online or show up — but high season mornings can sell out of tandem kayaks. Bring sunscreen (reef-safe required), water, a hat, and a waterproof bag for your phone. No experience necessary. They accept credit cards. Allow 2-4 hours for the full paddle-and-explore experience.
