The Experience
Walk in off Keizerstraat — a block famous for its side-by-side synagogue and mosque — and Mondowa feels more like a neighborhood travel desk than a tour company: hand-drawn maps on the wall, a whiteboard of upcoming departures, and staff who'll happily redraw an itinerary while you sip coffee. Groups are small, guides are Surinamese (often multilingual in Dutch, English, and Sranan Tongo), and the vibe is unhurried. They handle everything from half-day city walks around historic Paramaribo to multi-day river journeys deep into the rainforest, plus cross-border runs into French Guiana, Guyana, and further afield to Brazil, Peru and the Dutch Caribbean. Book the overnight **Galibi turtle tour** on the Marowijne River (Feb–Aug) to watch leatherbacks nest at dusk, or the **Brownsberg Nature Park** day trip for waterfall swims and Brokopondo Lake views. Their **Braamspunt dolphin excursion** at the mouth of the Suriname River is a cult favorite for a half-day out. For a cross-border punch, take the **Saint-Laurent-du-Maroni** day trip into French Guiana — passport in hand, baguettes on the way back.

Walk in rather than email — response times on messages can be slow, but face-to-face they'll often bundle a tour with a Keizerstraat apartment rental (they operate a few short-stay units) at a better rate than either priced alone. If you're solo, ask which departures already have bookings; joining an existing small group drops the per-person price dramatically on interior trips.
