Ask for a vehicle with decent ground clearance if you're heading anywhere off the East-West Highway — the road to Atjoni (for Upper Suriname River lodges) turns to rutted laterite, and even the paved road to Albina toward French Guiana has stretches that will chew a low sedan. Request the local road map they keep behind the counter; GPS coverage gets patchy fast once you leave Paramaribo. If you're staying just a few days in the capital, downgrade to their smallest compact — parking in Paramaribo's old town is tight and fuel isn't cheap.

If your flight lands after dark and you're jet-lagged, seriously consider booking a hotel near the airport for the first night and picking the car up in the morning — Europcar can hold your reservation.
