Five floors above the Waterkant, Suriname's capital lets its hair down under swirling lights and a skyline you didn't know you'd fall for.
The Experience
You take a slow elevator up from a nondescript doorway on Waterkant and step out into something that feels much bigger than Paramaribo lets on. The room opens up on the fifth floor with a proper sound system, coloured beams cutting through the haze, and windows framing the lights strung along the Suriname River. The crowd is a genuine mix — young Surinamese in their weekend best, a scattering of Dutch expats, oil-and-gas workers off the rigs, and the occasional lost backpacker who wandered up from the waterfront cafés. DJs weave dancehall, soca, Latin, Bouyon and Afrobeats into international house and hip-hop, so the floor never quite settles into one groove. It's loud, it's sweaty, and by 1 AM the whole place is moving as one.
What to Try
Order a Parbo Djogo (the litre bottle of local lager) to share the way Surinamese do, or a Borgoe rum with cola if you want to blend in at the bar. Stake out a spot near the window early — the view over the Waterkant lights is the closest thing to a rooftop terrace you'll get, and it's where the best people-watching happens between sets.
Insider Tip
Doors say 10 PM but nobody arrives before midnight — show up around 11:30 to skip the awkward empty-room phase and still avoid the 1 AM queue at the elevator. Cash (SRD) moves faster than card at the bar, and dress up a little; Paramaribo takes its weekend nights seriously and trainers-and-shorts will get side-eye from the door.

Waterkant 78, 5th floor, Paramaribo. Open Friday and Saturday nights only, from around 10 PM until late. Entry is on the ground floor — look for the doorway and take the lift up. Taxis along Waterkant are easy after closing; agree on the fare before you get in.
