Boven National Park: Statia's Wild Northern Ridges

Cactus-studded volcanic hills, sea views to Saba, and trails almost entirely to yourself.

Why Go

While most visitors chase the rainforest inside The Quill, Boven quietly delivers Statia's most cinematic hiking: five extinct volcanic cones stitched together by ridge trails, with the Caribbean crashing on both sides and barely another boot print in sight.

The Experience

Boven covers the arid northern third of St. Eustatius, a completely different world from the lush Quill crater to the south. Expect sun-baked grassland, columnar cacti, wind-bent acacia, and the crumbling stone remains of 18th-century sisal plantations and a former distillery scattered along the paths. Roughly 21 km of trail loop across peaks like Boven itself, Bergje, Signal Hill, Little Mountain, and Gilboa Hill, most reached from the Venus Bay trailhead on the leeward side. The climbs are short but steep, the footing loose volcanic scree, and the payoff — panoramas across turquoise water to Saba, St. Kitts, and the green cone of The Quill behind you — is the kind of view you'd expect to share with a crowd but rarely do.

What to Try

The classic is the Boven Trail itself: a 2–3 hour round trip from Venus Bay plain up to the 289 m summit, weaving past the sisal ruins on the way up. If you want the widest views for the least sweat, do Gilboa Hill Third Ridge (about 2 hours) for a clean look at Saba floating on the horizon. Birders should tack on the Bergje loop early in the morning for tropicbirds, brown boobies, and Statia's endemic Lesser Antillean bullfinch. Ambitious hikers can link Venus Bay to Jenkins Bay for a full traverse ending at a secluded black-sand cove.

Insider Tip

Buy your $10 STENAPA hiking tag before you set off — it's valid for a full year and covers both Boven and The Quill, and rangers do check. Start at first light: the northern hills have almost no shade and the trade winds die down by mid-morning, turning the exposed ridges into a furnace. Wear closed-toe shoes with real tread (the loose scoria will shred sneakers) and carry at least 2 liters of water per person — there are zero refill points on the mountain.

The Practical Stuff

Trailheads are clustered around Venus Bay on the northwest coast, about a 10-minute drive from Oranjestad — you'll want a rental vehicle as there's no public transport and no taxi rank at the trail. Trails are free to walk once you have the annual STENAPA hiking tag ($10), sold at the National Parks visitor centre in Oranjestad and at Golden Rock Dive & Nature Resort. No guide is required, though STENAPA can arrange one on request. Best hiking months are December to April when it's cooler and drier; avoid the trails during and after heavy rain, when the volcanic soil turns to slick clay.
