Why Go

This is the hike that locals recommend and most tourists never find. The Wander Route follows St. Maarten's rugged southeastern coastline from Point Blanche (near Philipsburg) to Guana Bay, tracing cliff edges, rocky coves, and exposed headlands with unobstructed views of the Caribbean Sea. No guide needed, no entrance fee, and the kind of raw coastal scenery that does not exist on the resort side of the island.

The Experience

The trail starts near Point Blanche and follows the coastline southeast toward Guana Bay, covering terrain that ranges from packed dirt paths to rocky scrambles along cliff edges. The route is moderately challenging with steep sections, uneven footing, and full sun exposure, but the views compensate at every turn — open ocean stretching to the horizon, waves crashing against volcanic rock formations, and secluded coves accessible only on foot. Seabirds wheel overhead and iguanas sun themselves on the rocks. The hike takes 2 to 4 hours one way depending on pace and how often you stop to photograph the scenery or explore side coves. The trail is not formally marked throughout but follows the coastline closely enough that getting lost requires deliberate effort.

What to Try

Walk the full trail from Point Blanche to Guana Bay for the complete experience — the scenery evolves as you move along the coast, and the sense of isolation increases as you get farther from Philipsburg. If time is limited, the first section from Point Blanche offers the most dramatic cliff views within the first 45 minutes. Photography is rewarding throughout, especially during morning light when the cliffs glow warm.

Insider Tip

Start early in the morning to avoid midday heat — there is zero shade on most of the route. Bring at least a liter of water per person and wear proper hiking shoes, not sandals. The trail is one-way unless you arrange transportation at the other end, so plan your return. Weekday mornings are quietest. The route can be muddy and slippery after rain.
