Why Go

Helmet diving inverts everything intimidating about getting underwater. You do not swim. You do not hold your breath. You do not wear a tank. A lightweight helmet sits on your shoulders with fresh air pumped from the surface, and you simply walk down a ladder to the seafloor and stroll past coral, fish, turtles, and stingrays at about 10 to 20 feet. Under SXM runs these walks at Little Bay near Divi Little Bay Resort, where the shallow reef is dense enough that you are surrounded by marine life within your first few steps.

The Experience

A short boat ride from near Divi Little Bay Resort takes you to the dive platform. After a safety briefing, you climb down a ladder into the water with the helmet on your shoulders. Air flows continuously, so breathing feels completely normal — you can even wear glasses underneath. The guided walk follows a path across the sandy bottom past coral formations where parrotfish, sergeant majors, and angelfish swim at arm's length. Turtles and stingrays are regular visitors. Small wrecks and historical artifacts like cannons add underwater landmarks. Each session runs about 25 to 30 minutes on the bottom, with the total experience lasting roughly an hour including the boat ride and briefing. Ages 8 and up, non-swimmers welcome.

What to Try

The standard helmet walk is the only offering and it delivers exactly what it promises. If your group includes non-swimmers or children aged 8 and up, this is the underwater experience that actually works for everyone. The calm, supervised format removes the anxiety factor entirely — there is no mask clearing, no equalization, no buoyancy control. You walk and look.

Insider Tip

Little Bay is on the sheltered south coast, so conditions are calm nearly year-round. Go in the morning for better visibility — afternoon light shifts reduce the vivid colors on the reef. If you are staying at Divi Little Bay Resort, the departure point is essentially your backyard. Bring a waterproof phone case for photos — you cannot operate a camera with the helmet on, but some guides will take pictures for you.
