SNUBA SXM — Underwater Diving Without the Certification
Breathe underwater at 20 feet with zero scuba training required — the bridge between snorkeling and diving.
Why Go
SNUBA fills a gap that most visitors do not know exists. You breathe through a hose connected to an air supply on a raft above you, which means you can descend to about 20 feet and stay there, face-to-face with reef fish and corals, without a tank on your back, without certification, and without the ear-pressure anxiety that stops many people from trying scuba. If snorkeling felt too surface-level and scuba feels too committed, this is the middle ground.
The Experience
Tours depart from Bobby's Marina in Philipsburg. A short boat ride brings you to a calm, shallow reef site selected for visibility and marine life. After a safety briefing on the boat, you gear up with a mask, fins, and a weighted belt. The breathing hose connects to a floating raft overhead, giving you a 20-foot range of depth while the air supply stays on the surface. Guides are in the water with you the entire time, pointing out turtles, parrotfish, and coral formations. The underwater portion runs about 60 to 90 minutes. Non-swimmers can participate with a life vest, and the minimum age is 8 years old, making this accessible for families with older children.
What to Try
The standard guided SNUBA dive is the only product and it delivers exactly what it promises — unhurried time at depth with marine life, no certification paperwork, no heavy gear. Groups that include both confident swimmers and nervous ones work well here because the guide adjusts depth and pace individually. If some members of your group prefer to stay on the surface, they can snorkel alongside.
Insider Tip
Bobby's Marina is in central Philipsburg, so combining SNUBA with a morning or afternoon in town is easy. The boat ride out is short — if you are prone to seasickness, this is less exposure than a full-day charter. Bring an underwater camera if you have one; the guides will help position you for shots.
