Saint Martin Surf Club — Galion Beach Surf School Since 1995
The island's original surf school at Galion Beach, operating from Windy Reef center in the nature reserve since 1995.
Why Go
Galion Beach is one of the only consistent surf spots in St. Martin, and Saint Martin Surf Club has been teaching people to ride it since 1995. The east-facing reef break produces waves year-round from multiple swell directions, with the best conditions for experienced surfers from September through late March. A natural channel beside the break provides easy paddling back out, which is the kind of feature that makes a learning spot genuinely functional rather than frustrating.
The Experience
Sessions run twice daily — mornings from 10 AM to noon and afternoons from 2 to 4 PM — from the Windy Reef center directly on Galion Beach inside the nature reserve. The lesson menu covers surfing, windsurfing, surf foil, and wind foil across all skill levels. Beginners get soft-top boards and patient instruction in the white water before progressing to the break. Advanced surfers can rent performance boards and access coaching for technique refinement. The daily WhatsApp weather briefing at 8:30 AM helps you decide which session to target based on wind and swell conditions. The nature reserve setting means the beach is undeveloped and the water quality is high — no hotels, no vendors, just sand and reef.
What to Try
If you have never surfed, the morning session is typically calmer and better for learning. Experienced surfers should target the September-to-March swell season when the reef break produces proper waves. Foiling — both surf foil and wind foil — is the newer offering and Galion's consistent wind makes it one of the better learning spots in the Caribbean for this discipline.
Insider Tip
Join the WhatsApp weather briefing group when you book — the daily 8:30 AM updates from the coaches are genuinely useful and help you avoid flat days. The natural channel to the left of the break is the easy way back out; fighting the white water is unnecessary. Galion Beach has limited shade and no major facilities, so bring water, sunscreen, and reef-safe protection.
