Rotary Lookout Point — Panoramic Views and Tide Pools at Orleans
Free scenic viewpoint with crystal-clear tide pools and a walkable cay at low tide on St. Martin's east coast.
Why Go
Rotary Lookout Point sits along Rue de Coralita in the Quarter of Orleans, and it offers three things in one stop: a wooden platform with panoramic views of the eastern coastline and Caribbean Sea, shallow tide pools clear enough to see bottom detail without a mask, and — at low tide — a walkable path across the water to Caye Chateau, a small uninhabited cay just offshore. Free access, no ticket booth, no vendor pressure.
The Experience
The lookout platform provides the wide-angle view — coastline stretching in both directions, open ocean to the east, and the green hills of the Orleans quarter behind you. Below the platform, tide pools fill with seawater at predictable cycles, creating natural wading areas where small fish, urchins, and hermit crabs are visible in shallow, clear water. At low tide, the water between shore and Caye Chateau drops low enough to walk across, turning the small cay into an accessible mini-island exploration with its own rock formations and tidal creatures. The entire site is natural and undeveloped — no facilities, no gates, no hours. Parking is available nearby.
What to Try
Time your visit for low tide to walk across to Caye Chateau — check local tide charts or ask at your accommodation. The tide pools are best explored with reef shoes or water sandals; the bottom is rocky and some surfaces are slippery. For photography, the morning light hits the east-facing coast first and makes the water in the pools glow.
Insider Tip
Most visitors drive past Orleans without stopping. This spot is not on the standard tourist circuit, which means you will likely have it to yourself on weekday mornings. The walk to Caye Chateau is tide-dependent — if you arrive at high tide, the path is submerged and you will need to wait or come back. Bring a towel if you plan to wade in the pools.
The Practical Stuff
Free access, no tickets or hours. Located on Rue de Coralita, Quarter of Orleans, French side. Parking available nearby. No facilities — bring water and sun protection. Best visited at low tide for the Caye Chateau walk. Suitable for all ages with supervision near the water. Photography-friendly.
