Why Go

Céline runs a ceramic painting studio in Hope Estate where you pick a blank piece — mug, plate, bowl, decorative sign — paint it with your own design using provided tools and paints, and she fires it in the kiln. The result is a functional, handmade souvenir that you actually created, not something pulled from a shelf. The studio atmosphere is relaxed and creative, suitable for children, adults, and groups including birthday parties.

The Experience

Walk in, choose your blank ceramic piece from the available inventory, and sit down with paints, brushes, and tools at a workstation. Céline provides guidance on technique if you want it or lets you work independently if you prefer. Designs range from simple patterns that children enjoy to detailed illustrations that artistic adults can spend hours refining. Once your piece is painted, it goes into the kiln for firing — the process takes a few days, after which you pick it up or arrange shipping. The studio also displays Céline's own hand-painted functional ceramics, which are available for purchase if you prefer a finished piece without the DIY process.

What to Try

Choose a piece you will actually use at home — a mug or plate that becomes part of your daily routine. The experience is more meaningful when the end product has a purpose. For children, the guided painting with simpler designs keeps them engaged for 30 to 60 minutes. Adults who want a longer session should choose a larger piece or a more detailed design.

Insider Tip

The studio is only open Wednesdays and Saturdays, so plan accordingly. Hope Estate is in the interior of the French side, away from beaches — pair this with a visit to nearby shops or the Super U grocery store for a different kind of St. Martin experience. If you are leaving the island before the kiln firing is complete, discuss shipping options with Céline.
