Maho Beach House — Where Planes Land Over Your Sunbed
Beach accommodation at the island's most iconic and photographed spot.
Why Go
There is exactly one beach in the world where 747s pass close enough overhead that you can read the airline logos. Maho Beach is that place, and Maho Beach House puts you on Beacon Hill Road, steps from the sand where jet blast and turquoise water coexist in a way that shouldn't work but absolutely does.
The Experience
Maho Beach House sits at 2 Beacon Hill Road, positioned between the famous beach and the entertainment district that grew up around it. The Maho experience is unlike anything else in the Caribbean — you're simultaneously at a beautiful beach and watching commercial aircraft on final approach to Princess Juliana Airport's Runway 10. The schedule is predictable enough that regulars know when the big planes are coming and position themselves accordingly. Beyond the plane-watching spectacle, Maho functions as a proper beach destination. The water is warm and swimmable between arrivals, the sand is well-maintained, and the surrounding area packs more restaurants, bars, and nightlife into a small radius than anywhere else on the island. Salt Restaurant & Bar is nearby for elevated beachside dining. Secret Beach, a calmer cove just south, offers an escape when you want sand without the aviation soundtrack. Beach Me Up Boutique handles last-minute swimwear and souvenir needs.
What to Try
Time your beach visit for afternoon arrivals when the largest aircraft come in — check the Princess Juliana Airport FIDS for the schedule. Walk south to Secret Beach for a quieter swim after the plane-watching excitement. Explore the Maho nightlife strip after dark when the casinos and bars come alive.
Insider Tip
The fence at the end of Runway 10 is where thrill-seekers stand during takeoffs to feel the jet blast. It's intense and not officially encouraged, but it's become a ritual. For plane photography, the beach gives you better angles than the fence.
