Landing Planes Observation Beach — The Plane Spotting Strip

Feel the jet blast and watch 747s clear your head by meters.

Why Go

The landing planes observation area near Beacon Hill Road in Simpson Bay is where aviation meets beach culture in the most spectacular way. Stand on the sand as commercial jets descend just meters overhead on their final approach to Princess Juliana International Airport.

The Experience

This stretch of beach at the end of the airport runway has become one of the most photographed spots in the Caribbean. Planes on approach to Runway 10 pass directly overhead at shockingly low altitude — close enough to read the airline livery and feel the engine noise in your chest. The experience is visceral and thrilling in a way that videos never fully capture. Between landings, it is a perfectly pleasant beach with calm water and views across Simpson Bay. When a big aircraft is on approach (visible on flight tracking apps), everyone on the beach stops, pulls out their phones, and watches the spectacle unfold. Departures bring their own drama — the jet blast from aircraft powering up at the runway end can knock people off their feet (signs warn you to hold on).

What to Try

Download a flight tracking app (Flightradar24 or similar) and time your beach visit to incoming wide-body aircraft — the bigger the plane, the more dramatic the pass. Record a slow-motion video of a landing approach. Stand behind the fence at the runway end during a departure to feel the jet blast (at your own risk — posted warning signs are serious).

Insider Tip

Morning arrivals from Europe and afternoon flights from the US bring the largest aircraft. The spot is busiest between 1-4 PM when multiple flights converge. For the best photos, position yourself so the plane approaches toward you with the ocean and beach in the background. The nearby Driftwood Boat Bar is the perfect place to wait between flights with a cold drink.
