Why Go

Hotel Mont Vernon is the property that put Orient Bay on the map. Built on the hillside overlooking the northern stretch of Baie Orientale, this was one of the first major hospitality developments on what is now St. Martin's most famous beach. The complex has evolved over the decades — individual units now operate under different management — but the Hotel Mont Vernon name remains synonymous with Orient Bay itself.

The Experience

There is a reason an entire neighborhood carries this hotel's name. Hotel Mont Vernon was the anchor development that transformed the Orient Bay hillside from empty scrubland into one of the French Caribbean's most desirable addresses. The complex sprawls across the slope above the beach, with buildings stepped into the hillside to maximize views of the bay, the offshore islands, and the Atlantic horizon. The property has gone through multiple phases — parts of it now function as individually managed vacation rentals (including luxury operations like Excellence), while other sections retain more traditional hotel operations. What has not changed is the location: directly above Orient Bay Beach with path access to the sand, and positioned at the quieter northern end where the beach curves away from the main club strip. The area around the hotel has grown to include restaurants, a grocery store, and the small businesses that support a residential tourist community. Lulu's Corner and Rhum Gouverneur 1648 / Oualichi are both nearby, offering casual dining and rum tasting that reflect the French-Caribbean character of the neighborhood.

What to Try

Walk from the hotel grounds directly to Orient Bay Beach via the hillside path. Explore the beach from north to south — the character changes every few hundred meters. Stop at Lulu's Corner for a casual meal with a local feel. Visit Rhum Gouverneur 1648 / Oualichi for a rum tasting and learn about the island's distilling history. Browse Ma Doudou for locally made souvenirs and Caribbean crafts.

Insider Tip

The Hotel Mont Vernon complex is large enough that unit location matters. Units on the upper floors of the eastern-facing buildings get the best sunrise views and catch the trade winds that keep rooms cool without heavy air conditioning. Ask about unit position when booking.

The Practical Stuff

Address: B.P. 1174, Baie Orientale, Orient Bay (97150), French side. The complex includes parking, pools, and beach access. Several restaurants and a grocery store are within walking distance. A car is useful for island exploration. The complex is large — some units are closer to the beach than others, so confirm the specific building location.
