Gibbs Bay — Secluded Snorkeling Cove for Adventurers
A steep scramble down to pristine water and marine life.
Why Go
Gibbs Bay is a small, secluded beach between Guana Bay and Pointe Blanche on the Dutch side, accessible via a challenging steep and rocky descent. White sand, turquoise water, abundant marine life in the rocky shallows, and the kind of solitude that only comes from beaches you have to earn.
The Experience
Gibbs Bay is hidden between the cliffs of the southeastern coast, reached by a steep path that filters out casual visitors and leaves the beach to those willing to make the effort. The cove is small — white sand mixed with rocky outcrops, clear turquoise water, and an underwater landscape that rewards snorkelers with abundant fish and marine life congregating around the rocky formations. The beach is popular among locals who value its privacy and natural beauty, and among adventurous visitors who have been told about it by someone in the know. There are no facilities — no chairs, no vendor, no lifeguard — just the beach, the water, and the quiet satisfaction of being somewhere most tourists will never find.
What to Try
Snorkel the rocky areas for abundant marine life — the protected cove creates a natural aquarium. Swim in the clear, calm water. Explore the rocky shoreline. Enjoy the solitude and the absence of commercial beach culture.
Insider Tip
The path down is steep and rocky — wear proper shoes with grip, not flip-flops. Bring minimal gear, as you will be carrying everything down and back up. Water shoes are useful for rocky entry to the water. The return climb is more demanding than the descent, so save energy. Visit on calm days only — the cove can be less protected during rough seas.
