Balaou SXM — Floating Restaurant in Grand Case Bay
A restaurant anchored in the middle of the bay — boat access only.
Why Go
Balaou SXM is a floating restaurant and bar anchored in the crystal-clear waters of Grand Case Bay, accessible only by boat. This is not a waterfront restaurant — it is literally in the water, surrounded by nothing but sea, sky, and the Grand Case coastline on the horizon.
The Experience
Balaou redefines dining out by removing the "out" entirely — you dine on the water, at a floating platform anchored in Grand Case Bay. A small boat shuttles you from shore to the restaurant, and within minutes you are sitting on a deck surrounded by turquoise Caribbean sea, drink in hand, with fish visible in the water below your feet. The menu is intentionally compact: crispy rice with tuna tartare, squid tempura, pizzas, and a selection of cocktails and drinks. The food is good, but it is not really the point — the setting is the main course. Watching the sun change the color of the water around you, feeling the gentle sway of the platform, and looking back at Grand Case's colorful shoreline creates a dining experience that no land-based restaurant can replicate.
What to Try
Crispy rice with tuna tartare is the signature appetizer and a genuine standout. Squid tempura for something crispy and light. Pizza for a full meal. Cocktails are the real star — the bartender works the floating bar with the ocean as a backdrop. Order something colorful and photograph it against the water.
Insider Tip
The boat shuttle means capacity is limited — reservations are essential, especially during high season and weekend sunset hours. Go for late afternoon when the light turns golden and the bay is at its most photogenic. Bring a waterproof phone case. Swimwear is appropriate attire — you can jump in the water between courses.
The Practical Stuff
Located in Grand Case Bay, French side. Boat access only — a shuttle runs from the Grand Case beach area. Reservations strongly recommended. Price range: $$ — moderate for the unique setting. Cards accepted. The restaurant operates seasonally, so check current status before visiting. Bring sun protection — there is limited shade on the floating platform.
