Thrifty Car Rental

The island's trusted wheels for circling Nevis Peak and chasing hidden beaches.

Why Go

Nevis is small enough to lap in an hour but rewards those who linger, and a Thrifty rental (run locally by TDC) is the simplest way to trade taxi schedules for spontaneous stops at rum shops, tide pools, and viewpoints most cruise-day visitors never see.

The Experience

Pick up your car at the Charlestown office at Pinney's Industrial Site or arrange delivery to Vance W. Amory International Airport, and within minutes you're on the 20-mile ring road that hugs the coast around Nevis Peak. The fleet leans practical - compact SUVs and hatchbacks well-suited to the island's narrow lanes, occasional potholes, and steep drives up to plantation-inn hilltops. Staff are famously easygoing (this is Nevis, after all), walking first-timers through the local quirks: driving on the left, watching for free-roaming goats and vervet monkeys, and honking a friendly 'beep-beep' before blind curves. Most renters use the car to string together a beach day at Pinney's, a hike to the Source, and an evening at Sunshine's without ever having to negotiate a taxi fare.

What to Try

Ask about a mid-size 4x4 if you're planning to tackle the rougher tracks up to Golden Rock or the Botanical Garden's back roads - the extra clearance is worth it. Rentals typically come with unlimited mileage, which matters less on a 36-square-mile island than the freedom to double back for a second helping of johnnycakes at Wilma's Diner.

Insider Tip

You'll need a temporary local driving permit (around US$24, valid for three months), and Thrifty/TDC will process it for you at pickup if you bring your home license - skip the separate trip to the police station most guides send you on. Also, fill up at the Sol station in Charlestown before returning; the airport has no fuel pump and you'll pay a refuel surcharge otherwise.

The Practical Stuff

Main office at Pinney's Industrial Site, Charlestown, with airport pickup available at Vance W. Amory International (NEV). Hours: Mon-Thu 8am-4pm, Fri 8am-5pm, Sat 8am-1pm; closed Sunday, so plan Sunday returns in advance. Phone: +1 869-469-1005. Drive on the LEFT. Credit card and passport required at pickup. Book ahead in high season (Dec-Apr) - the island's rental pool is limited.

Pair It With

  • Pinney's Beach Guide — Just minutes from the Charlestown pickup counter - the natural first stop to test-drive your rental and grab a Killer Bee at Sunshine's.
  • Golden Rock Inn Guide — The winding hillside drive up to this historic plantation inn is exactly why you rented a car instead of relying on taxis.
  • Nevis Peak trailhead — Having your own wheels means an early-morning start before the clouds roll in - impossible to coordinate with island taxi schedules.
  • Charlestown Saturday Market — Load up on mangoes, sugar apples, and fresh fish, then stash it all in the boot for a self-catered sunset picnic.
